Once upon a time, holiday shopping was an experience. Folks carved out entire Saturdays or Sundays and headed to their local downtowns to browse through the retail shops. The experience was fun and quaint. You had lunch at the local diner. Then along came the malls.

It was a simple but profound thought that struck me as I recently read Anna Lappé’s “Diet for a Hot Planet” (Bloomsbury Press, 2010): Where and how we shop for our food –– and for everything else, for that matter –– is directly tied to the health of our planet.
