Two of five men detained by 4th Precinct officers on April 25 were arrested and charged with grand larceny-fourth degree connected to an alleged pattern of early morning thefts of property from vehicles in the Five Towns, police said.
The police officers saw five men looking into parked vehicles in Woodmere at 4 a.m. on that Sunday. Police recovered items allegedly taken from a nearby parked vehicle. Jaquan Merrero and Raquan Howard were arrested. The other three men were issued summons and released. All the men stopped by the police live in Inwood and Far Rockaway.
According to police, the two men arrested are believed to be responsible for the rash of vehicle break-ins, which had occurred in North Woodmere and other parts of the Five Towns. This type of crime typically increases during the warmer weather, police said.
To help avert this from happening the police recommend locking car doors, even if the vehicle will be unattended for a short time; do not leave valuables inside the cars, even if parked in the driveway; don’t delay reporting any suspicious activity to 911 and if a victim of a crime call 911.
