Back from an antique land with tales to tell

My mom is in a hyper-vigilant mode, keeping my dad moving and generally scanning the periphery for bad stuff. She asks me if the white ceiling in my garage has asbestos. She asks if I changed the water filter. She is appalled that I drive anywhere alone at night.

When I go out to walk the dog at 10 p.m., she waits up in the den until I get back. She double-locks the door. She turns on some lights.

Before I go to bed, I study up on my astronomy. I know that at breakfast there will be discussion of the earth and the sun, and I want to be prepared, even though he isn’t really asking about the earth and the sun and I can’t answer the question he’s asking.
