‘Ultimate big brother’ was civic-minded

Donald Boas, a former Woodsburgh resident who served on the Board of Governors and was a member of the Woodmere Club, died in Jupiter, Fla. on June 25. He was 78.
Born on July 9, 1935 in Manhattan to Edwin C. and Minerva Boas, he was a graduate of Woodmere Academy in 1953 (the school merged with Lawrence Country Day School to become Lawrence Woodmere Academy.
Boas attended Cornell and Boston universities, where he learned the skills to eventually work on Wall Street as a broker, a manager, and later, the senior vice president of Shearson Lehman Brothers. He also worked at Drexel Burnham, Smith Barney, and HKC Securities.
“He was a loyal and devoted father to his two children, Amy and Robert,” Boas’s younger brother, Jimmy, said. “He loved visits with his five grandchildren.”
Involved in his community, Boas served on the boards of a few institutions. In addition to the Woodmere Club, he served on the boards of Temple of Beth-El in Cedarhurst, Lawrence Woodmere Academy and Long Island Jewish Hospital.

Boas is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sande; his children, Amy (Richie) Walken of Chicago and Robert (Erica) Boas of Merrick; and his grandchildren, Spencer, Owen, Paige, Zachary and Hailey. He was predeceased by his parents and a daughter, Margie Boas.
Funeral services were held at Boulevard-Riverside Chapel in Hewlett. Burial was at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Ridgewood, Queens.
“He was the ultimate “big brother” to me, always there when I needed him,” Jimmy said. “He always had a wonderful sense of humor, a great practical joker.”
