Final preparations for Hewlett High School’s upcoming Interview Day, an overview of this year’s Virtual Enterprise program, and business study scholarships were the topics of discussion at the district’s Business Advisory Board meeting on Oct. 16.
The board endorses the curriculum and serves as mentors for the various events during the school year, said Rose Panarelli, Hewlett-Woodmere School District’s chairwoman of business education.
“With programs like ours, in terms of career and business, we need to have outside people, advisors, mentors and consultants,” she said. “The board also helps with events like our Interview Day and Virtual Enterprise.”
Interview Day, Nov. 13, is a full school day where Hewlett High students preview their job interview skills. They sit for a mock interview with local business people. At this year’s event, a breakfast and lunch break discussion about career and technology education opportunities will be added.
“There is a career and technology education conference coming up in November at Hofstra University,” Panarelli said. “The State Education department is looking at more opportunities for students. On Interview Day, we will discuss this during breaks with the students.”
The Virtual Enterprise program involves a simulated business project, a major highlight of the school’s business education curriculum. A student team, together with leadership from a chief operating officer and chief financial officer, they work on a business they designed known as FlashComm, a telephone, Internet and utility company. Each year, the district competes with other area schools, showcasing their business. Last school year’s team took second place at the National Business Competition in April in New York City.
