A Far Rockaway man who lured a 7-year-old girl into his car and then told the child’s father what he had done was arrested a little more than an hour after the incident occurred last Saturday at 1:40.
Based on a statement from Rabbi Zalman Wolowik, the executive director of the Chabad of the Five Towns at 74 Maple Ave. in Cedarhurst, the girl, who had attended a weekly service, fell asleep in a chair.
Yan Kossa, 39, of Beach 31st Street, who was worshipping at Chabad asked the girl if she would like to nap in his car, Wolowik said in the prepared release. “He reportedly told the girl that her father had given permission for her to sleep in his car,” said Wolowik, who described Kossa as “an acquaintance of the girl’s father.”
According to Wolowik, the girl followed Kossa to his car, which was parked on Maple Avenue. He locked the car doors with the girl inside and returned to the center.
Wolowik said he and the father learned of what happened. “Upon hearing of the incident, Chabad called the police,” the rabbi stated. “When it was learned that the man did not in fact ask the girl’s father for permission to take the girl, the man was arrested by Nassau County police.”

Charged with unlawful imprisonment-second degree and endangering the welfare of a child, Kossa was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday. He is being held on $10,000 bail.
“This incident reminds us of the need for discussion about or children’s safety,” Wolowik said.
On Monday, June 29 at 8:15 p.m. at Chabad, Cheryl Friedman will conduct a forum “Staying Safe in an Unsafe World.”
