Five Towns to be sprayed for West Nile virus

Cedarhurst, Inwood, Lawrence Woodmere and Woodsburgh to receive ground treatment

Posted

On Wednesday, Aug. 27 between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m., sections of Cedarhurst, Inwood, Lawrence Woodmere and Woodsburgh will receive ground treatment by truck for the West Nile virus, officials from the Nassau County departments of Health and Public Works announced.
The recommendation to spray is based on the persistent presence of West Nile and mosquito activity in these communities, county officials said. The treatment areas will include north of the coastline along Reynolds Channel, south of Peninsula Boulevard and the coastline, east of the Queens border and west of Woodmere Boulevard.
To reduce exposure it is recommended that windows and doors are kept closed, sir conditioners should be set to re-circulate (if able), and window fans should be shut off. Keep children’s tots and pets inside and cover fish ponds during the spray period.
Individuals, especially pregnant women and children, should remain inside during the treatment and for about 30 minutes afterwards.
The effects of the ground treatment dissipate in a few hours, it is not necessary to wash off outdoor furniture or playground equipment before use, although doing so will not diminish the effectiveness of the pesticide applied.

The rain date for the spraying is Aug. 28.
