Gas main leak in Lawrence

Evacuated residents on Stuyvesant Place return home

The Stuyvesant Place residents in Lawrence who had to be evacuated have returned home, according to Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department Chief Joseph Sperber.

Workers repairing the roadway on Stuyvesant Place in Lawrence struck a low pressure main gas pipe causing a leak at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 12, according to Wendy Ladd, a National Grid spokeswoman.

"Ten people in five homes were evacuated by the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department," said Ladd, who added that National Grid was on the scene and assessed the damage.

"Residents were returned to there homes after National Grid secured the leak and the fire department

deemed the area safe at approximately 11:45 a.m.," Sperber said.
