Following the expansive Newsday story about football helmets, the differences between makes and models and concussions, the Hewlett-Woodmere School District purchased 125 Schutt Vengeance V2 helmets at a cost of just under $30,000 that are rated the safest based on a Virginia Tech University study that was cited in the Newsday article.

The helmets could be fitted with a sensor that can be programmed to track the impact of a hit to the helmet. The district does not have the sensors yet, officials said.
"The health and safety of all players who take the field for Hewlett-Woodmere is our highest priority," said Superintendent Dr. Ralph Marino. "After reviewing the emerging research from Virginia Tech regarding helmet safety, we immediately decided to purchase [the] new 5-star rated helmets for every players in our football program. Due to a collaborative effet, we were able to get the new helmets in time for our junior varsity and varsity  games this past weekend."
