The Long Island Rail Road has installed the long-awaited security cameras at the Cedarhurst and Lawrence train stations. LIRR officials declined to say how many were installed and exactly where they are located.

Several incidents of bias graffiti, including multiple incidents of the swastika being etched into the plastic panels of the waiting area partitions that initially occurred in 2012. Similar incidents were reported in 2013 and last year. Another incident occurred in January at the Cedarhurst station and another last month at the Lawrence station.

“The most effective way to prevent hate speech from spreading is to stop it from happening in the first place,” said Assemblyman Todd Kaminsky (D-Long Beach), who along with other elected officials, campaigned to have the cameras installed since last year. “Cameras provide a great measure of deterrence and send a message that hate speech will not be tolerated.”
