Life-saving rescue at the Five Towns Community Chest fair

At 2:30 p.m. last Sunday, an elderly man was sitting on a bench in Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park outside of the area where Five Towns Community Chest was holding its 30th annual fair.
According to Isaac Schulman, director of Hewlett-based Dr. Bo’s Diet Center, the man, collapsed onto his wife’s lap. “I alerted Dr. Bo [Rosenblat], who ran over to the gentleman and discovered that the was not breathing and had no pulse,” Schulman said. “Dr. Bo cleared the individual’s airway and began to resuscitate him.”
Schulman said he called 911 and within minutes the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department, Hatzalah emergency medical service and the police had responded. “He survived the incident thanks to the quick reaction of Dr. Bo Rosenblat and the first responders from Hatzalah and the fire department,” Schulman said.
The man in his 70s, according to LCFD Chief John McHugh, “was alert and conscious, and refused any further medical attention.”

Overcoming inclement weather
The fair was closed Saturday due to the rain, but the movie “Finding Nemo” was shown Saturday and a beautiful Sunday generated a crowded Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park. The event continued on Monday, Columbus Day.
Rides, games, an assortment of food, informational booths and musical entertainment were the fair’s attractions. The event is a primary fundraiser for Woodmere-based Community Chest, an organization that financially supports several local organizations and individuals in need.
Fair sponsors included the Nassau Herald, TD Bank, Maidenbaum Tax Reduction Group, the Sklar-Bodner Family and more than 100 local businesses and professionals.
