Meadowmere Park Fire Department to get generators

The New York Rising Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery Funding approved a $500,000 request from the Town of Hempstead that will be used to purchase two generators for the Meadowmere Park Fire Department.
Meadowmere Park, a neighborhood of approximately 100 homes, was severely hit by Hurricane Sandy. Many residents found shelter and were provided meals in the firehouse immediately after the storm.
“Partnering with Hempstead Town to secure the generators for our fire department has been important in the rebuilding process since Sandy,” Meadowmere Park Fire Department Chief Kevin Carrero said in a town release.
The New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program was established to provide additional rebuilding and revitalization assistance to communities that were hit hard by Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Meadowmere Park is one of a half dozen communities in the town that have been recognized as the most affected within the state.
“These generators will have a tremendous and positive impact on our emergency preparedness. We are thrilled that the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program has responded to our request for generators,” Councilman Bruce Blakeman said in a prepared statement. “In case of another horrible storm, the Meadowmere Park Fire Department will be prepared.”

Capable of providing 200 kilowatts of power, the generators will provide needed backup power to the firehouse that serves as the community’s emergency response center.
“Hempstead Town has been aggressive in pursuing aid to mitigate additional financial impact for residents who have been tragically victimized by Hurricane Sandy,” Supervisor Kate Murray said in the release. “We wanted to make sure that the cost of these projects did not fall directly on the taxpayers, and the New York Rising Community Reconstruction program has made that possible.”
