Madeline Supple, No. 5 School crossing guard, dies at 82

Madeline Supple, the Number 5 School crossing guard for more than 20 years, died in her sleep of natural causes on Oct. 22. She was 82.

Born Madeline Philomena Iadanza to Michael and Rose Iadanza, on Henry Street in Inwood on August 25, 1927, she was the last of seven daughters born to a family of 10 children. Formerly married to Richard Supple of Rockaway Beach, she raised her five children in Cedarhurst and was a lifelong Nassau County resident.

Her 13 grandchildren said they remembered her fierce Gin Rummy card skills and her nightly habit of crocheting while “Murder She Wrote” droned on as background noise. Her five children described a dedicated and loving mother who generously cooked meatballs and sauce for the entirety of Court Street — and they knew to be home for dinner by the time Cedarhurst's streetlights went on — or else.
