Note to millennials: Didn't vote? Not cool.

Mitch McConnell isn’t going to change the world. Apparently, neither is Barack Obama. But the folks who will change the world stayed home on Election Day.

According to Business News International, fewer than 25 percent of millennials voted last week.

A millennial is someone 18 to just over 30 years old. Their values, aspirations, behaviors, biases and habits distinguish them from other generations, including the Silent Generation, ages 69 and over; the baby boomers, ages 50 to 68; and Gen X, 34 to 49. According to the Pew Research Center, my parents are members of the Silent Generation, while I belong with the boomers. My kids are Gen X, and my grandkids don’t have a name for their generation yet.

Right now, right here in America, it is the millennials’ moment. What demands attention is the fact that so few of them voted in this election. Some 25 percent said they planned to vote, but the number is believed to be much lower. In 2010, some 32 percent said they would vote, but only 21 percent actually cast ballots.

Dear millennials, stay away from the polls at your peril. Even if you’re having one of those trendy, protracted adolescences followed by a delayed adulthood, you must realize that you’re growing up. Even if you still live with Mom and Dad, you need to become a citizen of the community and the world. Time to untether yourself from the smartphone and engage.

Anecdotal evidence indicates that many millennials didn’t even know there was an election last week. The irony is that thousands of young people live disconnected from national events while they’re hyper-connected to one another via social media.

What makes a millennial? Apparently, I’m about half a millennial. I answered a Pew Research questionnaire that evaluates millennialism, and my score was 46 out of 100. I was asked how many hours of TV I watch, whether I read a newspaper, how much time I devote to video games, whether I have a landline or just a mobile phone, how many texts I send in a day, how important a high-paying job is to me, what I think about interracial marriage, whether I’ve ever posted an online profile, how important religion is to me and whether I have tattoos or any piercings besides my earlobes. Interesting, no?
