Long Island Cares Inc. — The Harry Chapin Food Bank
The late singer-songwriter and activist Harry Chapin founded the Hauppauge-based Long Island Cares Inc. in 1980, and today it supports 550 food pantries and soup kitchens across the Island. For more, log onto licares.org or call (631) 582-FOOD (3663).

The Interfaith Nutrition Network
Begun in a Hempstead church in 1982, the Interfaith Nutrition Network, commonly known as the INN, runs 19 soup kitchens across Long Island, feeding 7,500 people a day. More information can be found at the-inn.org or by calling (516) 486-8506.
Rock and Wrap It Up!
This Cedarhurst-based organization dates back to 1990, when activist Syd Mandelbaum had the idea to collect surplus food from rock concerts, professional sports games and restaurants and distribute it at food pantries and soup kitchens around the country, many of them on Long Island. Coloki Inc.
The nonprofit Coloki Inc., an acronym for Compassion, Love and Kindness, runs a communal garden and food pantry at the Freeport Work Hiring Center, which provides day laborers a safe place to stay while waiting for construction and landscaping jobs. The center helps to feed 50 to 100 laborers a day. Many of them, immigrants who work only sporadically, would go hungry if not for Coloki.
The organization, founded in 2010 by Merrick resident Liz O’Shaughnessy, is holding a fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Mulcahey’s Pub and Concert Hall in Wantagh, from 5 to 9 p.m. A $55 admission fee includes buffet dinner, open bar and live music.
