Superheroes were the theme for the Peninsula Public Library’s 2015 summer reading program, “Every Hero Has A Story.” To honor all the participants, from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade, an end of program party was held in the library’s parking lot on Aug. 19.

The children were treated to a bounce house, snacks, games such as bowling and Pin the Cape on the Superhero, face painting, a water balloon toss and raffles.

Prizes were also awarded to those who read the most books over the summer. There were three winners in grade levels pre-K through first grade, second through fourth grade, and fifth through eighth grade, said Ilene Madden, Peninsula Public Library’s children’s librarian. “It was great to collaborate with Carolynn Matulewicz, the acting director, to make this happen,” Madden said. “We had over 300 participants signed up this summer.”

Daniel Rosales’ two daughters, Daniela, 6, and Diana, 3, took part in the program. “We are amazed at how much Daniela read this summer,” he said. “I don’t know how she does it. Both girls love to read and love their books. Diana will pick up a book and pretend to read already. We love this program. It’s been so great for them.”

Ella Adler, 9, of Cedarhurst was the top reader in her fourth grade level. “People should read because it’s fun and it’s good for you,” she said. “My favorite book to read this summer was ‘A Year Without Autumn.’”

Pinny Twersky, 10, of Lawrence, who attended the program with his brother, Avrumi, 6, said he loved coming to the summer program every day. “Books about Barney are my favorite,” he said. “What I like most is spending time with my mommy and brother, reading our books together.”

Top readers were: Daniela Rosales, first, Patrick Eribo, second and Mohammad Fatz, third at the Pre-K to first grade level. In the second through fourth grade level were Ella Adler, Ereina Verma and Jose Sequeira. In the fifth through eighth grade level it was Becca Adler, Ari Blum and Damilola Kittanin.
