Former Woodmere resident Pearl Silverstein, who enjoyed games from the handball court to putting puzzles together, died on Nov. 12. She was 93.
Born in New York City on Feb. 25, 1921, Silverstein was raised in Brooklyn. As a young woman, her favorite outdoor activity was playing handball, her son, Robert said. He remembers his mother would tell stories of sweeping snow from the court during the winter. “It was on the handball court at Brighton Beach she met Phil Silverstein,” Robert said. “After many games together, they were married in 1947.”
Pearl and Phil raised theirs sons, Robert and David, in Woodmere where Phil set up his dental practice. While raising her family, Silverstein pursued many interests and took courses in singing, painting and sculpting.
“She also enjoyed her mah-jong games with the girls,” Robert said. “The interest that lasted well into her eighties was word games and crossword puzzles. She was successful in solving a great number of the NY Times crosswords including Saturdays and Sundays.”
In 2010, Pearl moved to Southwick, Mass. to be near her son Robert and his wife, Lyn. “She had four happy years making new friends and spending time with her family,” Robert said.
