Robert Kozak, 38, of Atlantic Beach, was sentenced to up to seven years in prison on May 21, for driving twice while high on heroin, the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office said.
Kozak was caught twice between October of last year and January driving while high in Long Beach and Lynbrook. He pleaded guilty to driving while ability impaired, with combined drugs and alcohol, aggravated unlicensed operation-first degree and criminal possession of controlled substance-seventh degree.
In October, Kozak rear-ended another car stopped at East Park Avenue and Monroe Boulevard in Long Beach. Police found his arms were bleeding from fresh track marks made by using needles to inject heroin. Emergency responders on the scene thought he was high on heroin. Kozak refused a blood test, according to officials.
He was seen asleep at the wheel on Jan. 15, when driving on Lakeview Avenue in Lynbrook, according to the DA. After waking up he drove erratically toward Merrick Avenue before Lynbrook police officers stopped him. Recent track marks were bleeding, again.
“Each time Mr. Kozak got behind the while high on heroin, he was playing Russian Roulette with other people’s lives,” said Acting DA Madeline Singas. “Thankfully, this defendant’s repeated disregard for the safety of others did not result in injury or death.”
