Record-setting win for Lawrence

Capobianco, Robinson pave way to title game

Records are made to be broken, and a bunch of Nassau County and Long Island football marks either fell or were tied in top-seeded Lawrence’s 62-7 victory over No. 4 Valley Stream South in a Nassau Conference III semifinal Friday afternoon at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium.

Junior quarterback Joe Capobiano threw five touchdown passes, setting the Nassau single-season record and tying a county playoff game record in the process, including two to senior receiver Eddie Robinson, who established a new L.I. mark for scoring grabs in a season, and senior running back Tyler Fredericks added three touchdowns as the defending champion Golden Tornadoes (10-0) cruised into next Friday’s title game against Plainedge at 4 p.m.

“Records are great, but it’s the team record that matters most,” said Robinson, who also set a new Nassau playoff record for receiving yards in a game with 208, breaking the former mark of 203 set by East Rockaway’s Sean Bohan two years ago. “We’ve been on a mission since we lost to Sayville,” Robinson said of last year’s L.I. Class III final. “Everyone’s been working hard since the summer, and we have the same goal.”

But there’s one more hurdle for each side to go before the hype can begin for a Lawrence-Sayville rematch on Nov. 30 at Hofstra. “We have the LIC in the back of our minds, but we’re taking it one game at a time,” said Capobianco, who threw his record-setting 35th touchdown pass of the year to Robinson, a 36-yard strike, early in the third quarter to surpass Oceanside’s Tyler Heuer’s 2010 mark. “We can’t look past the county championship.”

Plainedge, the No. 3 seed, rallied to beat No. 2 Glen Cove, 34-27, in Friday’s other semifinal. Lawrence topped the Red Devils to win last year’s Nassau Conference III crown, 64-34, and trampled them in a 63-point shutout a month ago.
