Unopposed candidates for mayor and two trustee seats elected by unprecedented 648 total voters

In the Cedarhurst village election held on Wednesday, a total of 648 voters elected the three candidates, Benjamin Weinstock, Ari Brown and Israel Wasser, who all ran unopposed.

Appointed mayor after the death of Andrew Parise on Feb. 8, Weinstock was elected to the post with a total of 620 votes. Incumbent Trustee Ari Brown and appointed board member Israel Wasser were also elected, earning 606 and 599 votes, respectively. All terms are four years.

Weinstock said his goal was to establish himself as the new leader of the village, while continuing Parise’s legacy of leading a user-friendly village government with an open-door policy: When residents come to Village Hall, they can speak to the mayor directly.

“We are working on the transfer of our sewer system operation over to the county,” he said. “Our roads and potholes need fixing. We have to find money to fix the roads, whether it’s through bonding or grants. Safety and security is also another issue that concerns our residents.”

Brown said his priority is finding new sources of funding to save taxpayers money and to obtain funding used for improving Cedarhurst’s roads.

“Everything we do in village hall is a team effort,” he said. “Having been on the Business Improvement District Board three years prior to becoming a village trustee, I focused and redoubled my efforts to beautify the down town and decrease vacancies. When I started working at Village Hall, vacancies were in the 12 to 14 percent range. I’m so thrilled that the fruits of our labors are being realized. Out of our 283 stores in the village, we now boast a vacancy rate of less than three percent.”

Wasser served on the village’s zoning board for one year before being appointed trustee. “I am looking forward to serving on the board as a trustee to maintain the current board’s vision to continue to provide quality services,” he said. “I also hope to help maintain, in my position, the low taxes that the Village of Cedarhurst has.”
