Only one incumbent is being challenged

In the villages of Lawrence, Woodsburgh, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Bay Park and Hewlett Neck, residents could go to the polls on June 17 to elect and re-elect trustees. This year, there are no challengers for all the two-year terms, except one in Atlantic Beach.

It will be a slightly different election year in the village as Mayor Martin Oliner is term limited — three, two-year terms — and the clock will begin ticking on incumbent Trustees, Deputy Mayor C. Simon Felder (third term) and Irving Langer, as Lawrence instituted term limits in February — eight consecutive years — however a board member can run again after a break in his or her service.
“There is still a lot to be done,” Oliner said. After being sidetracked due to Hurricane Sandy and Tropical Storm Irene in the past few years, the mayor said he wants to focus on improving the village’s water quality, fixing the traffic problems on Rockaway Turnpike, new parking privileges for residents and better signage throughout the village. “It has been a wonderful four-year period of serving and I look forward to doing the most I can in the last two years.”
Felder, also thinks there is unfinished business where it concerns the village’s infrastructure and also wants to beautify the downtown area with new sidewalks, tress and the installation of more benches on Lawrence’s “critical roadways.”
He reiterated his support for trustee term limits, a law he pushed for because of the reluctance to oppose incumbents. “There is a lot of talent in Lawrence, a lot,” he said.
Running for his second term, Langer said finding a way to sync the traffic signals on Rockaway Turnpike to cut congestion and increasing the Lawrence Yacht & country Club’s membership rolls are his priorities. “We are trying to do our best to bring more income to the village and I’m glad to be a part of it,” he said.
