Commemorating 11 years of service, Achiezer, the Lawrence-based community resource center founded and run by Rabbi Boruch Bender, which works with other groups to help families enduring hardships ranging from illness to financial troubles, held its annual dinner at the Sands in Atlantic Beach on Jan. 6.

While the event honored several people, it was dedicated in memory of Dr. Richie Friedman, a Cedarhurst resident and Hatzalah director who was killed after being struck by a car as he walked along Washington Avenue in Lawrence on Dec. 1.

The Edith Lowinger Achiezer Volunteer Network was dedicated. Rabbi Yossy and Miriam Lea Ungar received the Pillars of Chesed Award and Drs. Ari Hoschander and Martin Kessler were presented with the Excellence in Medicine Award.

Michael Goldberg, executive director of Long Island Jewish Medical Center/Northwell Health, was named Achiezer’s Man of the Year and Leah and Shalom Jaroslawicz were given the Young Leadership Award.
