Battling classes creates an electric spirit

Posted

If one walked through Lawrence High School March 6-10, they would have seen students dressed up in anything but casual clothing. It was Spirit Week, yet again. All the grades dressed up for the second Spirit Week hosted by the Student Government in Action officers.

Monday was Pajama Day, Tuesday was Twin Day, Wednesday was Well-Dressed Day, Thursday was Jersey Day and Friday was team-theme day. This was the first time in Lawrence High history that there were two Spirit Weeks. Usually, the annual Spirit Week takes place in the middle of October before the homecoming varsity football game. But, a new event at the high school called for extra excitement: Battle of the Classes.

SGA Vice President Jessica Mastorides spoke about the Battle of the Classes. “Ever since I experienced Girls’ Sports Night my freshman year, I fell in love with the spirit that I got to be a part of. It was extremely upsetting when the event was cancelled after that year, and I wanted to reintroduce that activity for everyone, both boys and girls, from all grades to participate. My fellow officers and I thought Battle of the Classes would be a phenomenal way to unify the students of Lawrence High School through athletic, artistic and academic events.”

Battle of the Classes took place March 10 in the auditorium. The team themes were the elements of life: the freshman/sophomore team was Earth, the junior team was Water, and the senior team was Fire. Some of the activities were basketball, volleyball, memory code, human tic-tac-toe, obstacle courses, and soccer.

The scores were close the entire night, especially between the juniors and the seniors. The 12th-graders pulled through after the Tug-of-War and won the competition. The cheers from both the senior team and their supporters in the bleachers were more than just wild; the feeling was electric as the result was announced.

Students had an amazing time celebrating Spirit Week, and then finishing it all off with a night of fun at the high school. The underclassman say that they cannot wait for next year’s Battle of the Classes!
