Five Towns Kiwanis donates pediatric kits

The Five Towns Kiwanis continued its tradition of donating pediatric Trauma kits to local first responders. Two kits were given to Chevra Hatzalah of the Rockaways and Nassau County, the volunteer ambulance corps, along with a UBS matching gift program at Frank’s Steaks in Rockville Centre on Feb. 1.

Barry and Marcia Ringelheim donated the kits in memory of their parents Harry Tainowitz and Reba Schienberg and Irving and Blanche Ringelheim.
Kiwanis provides the kits under the auspices of the Kids Pediatric Trauma Center at Northwell LIJ Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center.

These kits in conjunction with the hospital’s trauma unit have helped to reduce child fatalities by more than 80 percent in the 25 years the program has existed. The program was established by the late Alfred Bevilacqua, who lived in Cedarhurst and was a state district governor of Kiwanis.

The kit contains medical devices that are specifically designed to be used on children in traumatic situations. Typical medical devices are designed for adult use and can be harmful to children. Equipment that is used by first responders can be replaced free of charge through Kiwanis.
