Going back to school with the National Council of Jewish Women in Hewlett

Roughly 850 children “shopped” for new clothing, school supplies and other items at the seventh annual Back 2 School Store sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women-Peninsula and South Shore sections at Hewlett High School on July 28.

More than 300 trained volunteers accompanied the kids as they shopped for free clothing and school supplies in their favorite colors and styles. Each child received a complete new outfit of clothing, including a shirt, pants, winter jacket, and sneakers. The children also received underwear, socks, a hat, gloves, pajamas, stuffed animals, in addition to a new backpack and school supplies. The idea is to help create positive self-esteem and enthusiasm, while readying children to focus on learning.

“We get more out of it than the kids do, it’s so rewarding,” said Myra Garber, president of the NCJW-Peninsula Section. “It’s in our hearts and we’re just so happy to do it.”

As the kids shopped, parents and caregivers had the opportunity to visit the on site Family Resource Center that included health and nutrition information, as well as community and social services.

Hope Coleman served as the coordinator and vice president of the Back 2 School Store event and Susan Fox, Peggy Klang and Penny Santiago were the committee co-chairs.

The National Council of Jewish Women is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
