Dylan T. Stolz, who was a fourth-grade teacher at Ogden Elementary School in the Hewlett-Woodmere School District, pleaded guilty to two felonies on May 6, according to the upstate Post-Star newspaper.

Stolz, 51, who was working at an upstate summer camp for boys was arrested on July 4 and charged with five counts of first-degree sexual abuse, state police said. He will serve 4 1/2 years in state prison, then be on parole for 10 years and be required to register as a sex offender.

According to the paper, Stolz maintains his innocence, and his plea is categorized as an Alford Plea, that allows defendants to plead guilty, while still maintaining their innocence.

After his arrest, the school district placed him on administrative assignment and sent a letter to parents and guardians about the situation. As of now, the district said it is taking the necessary steps to fire Stolz.

“As you may be aware, Mr. Dylan Stolz was arrested and charged in July 2018 with a series of criminal acts committed while serving as a camp counselor in upstate New York,” Superintendent Dr. Ralph Marino said in a prepared statement. “The district immediately placed Mr. Stolz on administrative reassignment, pending the outcome of the matter. Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools is moving forward expeditiously to terminate the employment of Mr. Stolz.”

He was arrested last year after allegations surfaced that he sexually abused campers at Brant Lake Camp ranging in age from 7 to 15, according to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in upstate Queensbury. Stolz was a counselor at the camp for the past 33 summers. It is roughly 80 miles north of Albany.

He turned down a plea deal of 7 to 12 years in January, and stood trial in February before a mistrial was declared after one of the victims recanted his accusations, the Post-Star reported.

Stolz faced 15 charges when he pleaded guilty to the two felonies, just before jury selection was set to begin. He is expected to be sentenced on June 21.
