Ernesto Rodriguez, a parishioner of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Inwood, sought to steal money from the Wanser Avenue church’s offering box on July 13, according to police.

Rodriguez, 52, saw the offering box was empty and then went to the building’s basement and allegedly took a wallet from a shopping bag belonging to a man, 66, who was cleaning up after a morning service, police said.

After the subsequent investigation, Rodriguez, who lives on Davis Avenue, also in Inwood, was arrested. He is charged with two counts of grand larceny fourth-degree and petit larceny. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on July 15.
