After 14 years in dormancy, the Boardwalk Café will re-open for business in mid-June, according to New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Rose Harvey. The café’s renovation is part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s NY Parks 2020 initiative that gave State Parks on Long Island more than $50 million in improvements for the 2018 summer season.

“The public will reap the rewards of Gov. Cuomo’s investment into Jones Beach,” Harvey said. “We’re going to be providing a great diversity of food experiences and renovating and restoring Jones Beach to its historic beauty.”

The Boardwalk Café’s history dates back to the 1930’s. A fire destroyed the original café in 1964, and its replacement restaurant, opened in 1968, was closed in 2004 due to structural failures, according to a 2013 state report.

Concessionaire Centerplate will operate the restaurant and offer a variety of healthy and traditional beach eats. The café’s grand opening is planned to occur before the Fourth of July holiday weekend and just weeks after The Landing, another new Jones Beach eatery, will have its formal grand opening on June 9.

Along with the new café, visitors to Jones Beach will be able to enjoy a new spray ground adjacent to the eatery this summer, as well as a new playground near the West Bathhouse.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen said that she was grateful for Governor Cuomo and the State’s investment into the South Shore’s state parks, stating that they provide recreation and enjoyment to millions of residents and visitors each year.

“With these improvements made possible by this funding, the South Shore is ready to lead the way this summer as we head into Memorial Day weekend,” Gillen said.
