The class of 2017 for Lawrence High School is represented by valedictorian Allen Green, salutatorian Aaron Paul Casanada and honored speaker Barbara Williams.

Green was the Grand Award winner in the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and Environment Project Olympiad — known as ISWEEEP — in Houston this year. He won $1,500 as well as a $300 Korean Science Serve Award.

He was also a Junior Science and Humanities Symposium semifinalist and placed third in the engineering category. Green conducted chemical engineering research at Stony Brook University through the Garcia Summer Research Program.

A captain and founder of Lawrence Quiz Bowl and Lawrence Science Bowl, he was the Tri-Music treasurer and a member of the honors strong ensemble, chamber orchestra and concert orchestra.

The author of a provisional patent and a publication in Materials Research Society Communications, Green will attend Brown University and study biomedical engineering and biochemistry.

Casanada takes up time and space and makes something out of it. “I play a space program simulator to try out new designs and pass the time,” said the future freshman at Stockton University, where he will major in aerospace engineering.

He was recognized by the American Chemical Society for outstanding achievement in Chemistry and was a member of Lawrence Quiz Bowl and Science Bowl.

Williams played sports — volleyball, bowling and badminton (all conference) — was involved in the yearbook, student newspaper, Students Against Destructive Decisions, National and Tri-M honor societies, math mentors and quiz bowl. She performed as part of the concert and chamber orchestras; the honors string ensemble and the orchestra that played in recognition of Lawrence schools’ 125th anniversary.

She received the St. John’s Women in Science Recognition Award and honorable mention in the Irish Cultural Society’s 2017 writing contest.

Aiming to help others, Williams said she plans on becoming a doctor — specially undecided — and for seven years will attend the Sophie Davis Biomedical Education BS-MD Program that is part of the City University of New York School of Medicine.
