Lawrence resident, Harriette Thayer, chairwoman of NYU Winthrop’s Board of Regents, and East Williston resident Dr. James D. chairman of the hospital’s Orthopedic Surgery department will each receive the hospital’s highest honorary award at the 27th gala on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the RXR Plaza in Uniondale, in recognition of their years of service to the NYU Winthrop and its patients.

Thayer, known to many as “Hap,” joined the Board of Regents in 2000. She was appointed to the Board of Directors, a role she has continued to hold since 2004. Her commitment to community service has been carried out with great passion and dedication, hospital officials said.

Several organizations have benefitted from Hap’s drive and business acumen over the years, most notably the American Red Cross of Nassau County. She has held the position of board chair of the American Red Cross when presented with the monumental impact of the events of September 11. During that time of crisis, Hap forged a deep and lasting relationship with NYU Winthrop, which assisted various efforts involving the organization and getting aid to first responders.

Capozzi joined the hospital in 2008. He is renowned for exceptional care of patients with a range of complex orthopedic conditions.
