Manor students make cultural connections

Posted

Seaford Manor Elementary School students traveled the world from the comfort of their classrooms during International Week on Jan. 8-12.

Among the countries that students “visited” were Bangladesh, Brazil, Germany, India, Ireland and Malta. Guest presenters included parents and grandparents who hail from those nations. They shared their culture through stories, artifacts and dance, and described family traditions.

Assistant Principal Mary-Ellen Kakalos said that by having the visitors come in and share their personal experiences, it created an authentic learning experience for students.

Donna Rosenblum, executive director of Reason2Smile, spoke to third-graders about the work her organization does to help fund a school in Mtwapa, Kenya. Her presentation included pictures of children who have benefitted from the educational opportunity.

Students also participated in activities in special subject classes, such as in physical education where students played European handball and in music where they learned national anthems from several countries. The school also created an international cookbook and each student contributed a recipe from a country of their choice.
