New Lawrence school playground is ‘amazing’

Christine Lopeck’s second grade class under the guidance of physical education teacher Don Makofske ignored the cold weather and were running with playful abandon as the Lawrence Primary School at the Number Two School students took advantage of the newly installed playground equipment on Jan. 2.

“I think it’s amazing, it’s good, this was a really good idea,” said student Humberto Mejia-Moran, who like many of his peers, found the merry-go-round to be his favorite item.

There are four different-sized slides, a jungle gym, rope and rock climbing areas, games such as connect three in a row and two benches — one inscribed Lawrence the other Bench Buddy.

The playground, which cost roughly $206,000, is totally open to provide teachers with a view of the children at all times and the No. 1 rule is only one child pushing the merry-go-round at a time, to help ensure child safety.

Principal Christine Moore said she appreciated the efforts of Superintendent Dr. Ann Pedersen, the Board of Education and the facilities staffers, “for their work in making this new playground an exciting reality for our Primary students,” Moore said.
