New scholar in residence

Rabbi Shais Taub is the new scholar in residence for the 2017-’18 year at the Chabad of the Five Towns. There will be a special Kiddush welcoming the rabbi and his family on Sept. 9 after morning services. He will deliver a sermon entitled, “Where is the best place to live in 2017?” Chabad’s scholar program was established 23 years ago.

Perhaps best known as a popular weekly columnist for Ami Magazine, Taub is also one of the most sought after speakers in the Jewish scene today having delivered Torah lectures in more than 100 cities on six continents. Although he will continue to travel on the lecture circuit, being based in Five Towns for the year will allow locals to learn with the rabbi regularly.

A monthly evening lecture series with Taub at Chabad — 74 Maple. Ave, Cedarhurst — will cover such topics as raising spiritually and emotionally healthy children, overcoming adversity, and how to infuse new joy into one’s religious life. The first lecture, “Repairing Your World,” will be on Sept. 11 at 8 p.m.

A weekly Tanya class for women will be held on Monday mornings at Chabad after the High Holidays. Taub is the author of the acclaimed “Map of Tanya” teaching tools and CD series as well as the author of the Jewish Learning Institute curriculum on Tanya, “Soul Maps.” The class will offer participants a comprehensive view of the overall structure and themes of the book on Tanya with the goal of completing the 53 chapters by the end of his year here next July.

“We are very excited about this new opportunity,” said Rabbi Zalman Wolowik, Chabad’s spiritual leader. “I think it reflects on how special this community is that we were able to secure a scholar of Rabbi Taub’s caliber to come study with us this year.”
