Sunya Kleiner was recognized for her community service at the National Council of Jewish Women-Long Island sections at their 22nd annual Women Who Make a Difference luncheon at Temple Avodah in Oceanside on May 3.

Kleiner, a member of the NCJW-Peninsula Section, became involved as a leader and volunteer in her B’nai Brith chapter, the Community Arts Council of the South Shore, Helen Keller Services and her synagogue even before she retired from teaching.

The Lawrence resident volunteered with the NCJW, became a board member and a vice president. She has helped to lead its renowned lecture series and has overseen the section’s wide ranging community service collaborations. Her hands-on involvement has aided the Back-2-School Store, the Center for Adult Learning and Enrichment, and other Peninsula Section projects.

Roslyn Sternlieb of NCJW Lakeville Section, Carol Fisher of NCJW South Shore Section, and Celia Rosenthal of NCJW Westbury Section were the other honorees. The keynote address was delivered by the NCJW’s newly installed national President, Beatrice Kahn.
