For the majority of Suzanne Gayle Kornfeld’s life Far Rockaway was her home community, where she met her husband, worked and raised three children and doted on a trio of grandchildren.

Kornfeld, who also lived in Woodmere for 20 years, died on Christmas Day. She was 82.

Born in Brooklyn on Aug. 29, 1936, to Ruth and Philip Kaplan, Kornfeld met Stanley Kornfeld on the Rockaway Peninsula. Married in 1959 they divorced 11 years later.

She worked for more than 40 years as a case manager serving the mental health community at Central Manor Home for Adults in Far Rockaway.

“Suzanne selflessly dedicated her life to loving and nurturing her family, friends and coworkers,” her son, Matthew, said.

Along with raising her family, which included daughters Dana and Shari, Kornfeld volunteered at a nonprofit thrift shop and fed, rescued, and adopted many animals. “Music, reading, dancing, watercolor painting, gardening and cooking for family and friends gave her joy,” Matthew said.

In addition to Dana, Shari and Matthew, she is survived by grandchildren Anthony, Nicole and Max, brothers Eddy and Marty, several nieces and nephews, many cousins and friends, all of whom touched her life, Matthew said.

In lieu of flowers and in the spirit of Kornfeld’s beliefs, those who wish to do so could make donations to a charity of their choice.
