Regarding the story “Town adopts mixed-use plan for Elmont” (April 19-25), the Town of Hempstead’s decision to vote on the Elmont rezoning plan should have been put on hold.

I recently sponsored an outreach program in conjunction with the state Department of Financial Services for homeowners in the 6th Senate District who have concerns about their mortgages. The turnout, according to DFS, was the highest they had seen for any of their mobile outreach services.

I recently read in –– where else? –– the Merrick and Bellmore Heralds that Senior Editor Scott Brinton took home first place for Best Column in the New York Press Association’s annual clips contest, as well as third place for column writing in the Local Media Association’s clips competition. I would like to offer my congratulations for these prestigious honors.

After the disastrous move by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and the Legislature’s Republican majority to close half of the police precincts in the county, the Democratic caucus was successful in pushing Mangano’s back against the wall so that he gave us a signed guarantee that there wouldn’t be one less patrol car in any neighborhood. The agreement also stated that there would be more law enforcement personnel in all of the policing centers.

Last year, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano cut $15 million Problem-Oriented Policing Unit officers from the county’s police department. He also laid off more than 200 county workers and more than 175 hospital employees. This year, his plan calls for closing half of the county’s precincts, in hopes of saving $20 million.

Once again, the Herald — specifically the Franklin Square/Elmont Herald — leads the way for the “big” newspaper. Your thorough coverage of the Walgreen’s story (“Pharmacy fiasco in Elmont?” Feb. 23-29) most assuredly led Newsday to devote quite a bit of space to the same story.

The League of Women Voters of Nassau County is seeking to ask the Nassau County Legislature on Feb. 27, at its 1 p.m. session, to follow Nassau County Charter Section 113 and appoint a Temporary Advisory Commission to execute fair and inclusive redistricting.
