Franklin Square resident creates community auction website
While working as deputy commissioner under County Executive Tom Suozzi in 2008, lifelong Franklin Square resident Gaspare Tumminello developed a website to sell Nassau County departments’ unused inventory. The website was a huge success, bringing the county hundreds of thousands of dollars monthly, Tumminello said, but he was terminated by County Executive Edward Mangano in 2010. Tumminello said he created the county auction website to replace the county’s use of sealed bid auctions to sell departments’ unused or unwanted items. Under sealed bid auctions, invitations were sent to a small number of county residents, which limited participation and profits, he explained. Junk police cars were selling for around $200 using sealed auctions, but were able to sell for nearly $1,000 after the site was created, he added. Peter DiSilvio, director of special projects for the Nassau County executive, said Mangano’s administration has been using the same auctioning method created by Tumminello. The administrations have also both worked with Auctions International, a company used to process items listed under auction, he said. DiSilvio said nearly 30 items are sold every three months from the county’s 56 departments, ranging from vehicles, machinery, furniture, electronics, books, memorabilia, property and office supplies. Items are listed on the website periodically, but at least once every three months, he added. DiSilvio said in 2010, nearly $120,000 was brought in by the county website, listed under the purchasing department on the county executive’s site, www.nassaucountyny.gov. “It has been running very efficiently and very quickly,” he said. After leaving the county executive’s office, Tumminello developed a website for local residents who want to sell personal items, www.wwproductaccess.com. The site is based on the same concept as the county auction site, he said. Worldwide Product Access is currently used by nearly 20 local residents who want to sell personal items without worrying about posting materials online or dealing with buyers, Tumminello said. The site has also been providing marketing advise to small businesses, he added. Tumminello, who ran for county legislator of District 8 in 2009 and lost to County Legislator Vincent Muscarella, said he believes the site is a great way for community residents to get rid of unused items, while making a profit. “It’s my passion and internal ambition to institute what’s best for the community,” Tumminello said. “If I can ignite members of the whole county of Nassau and get people to continue sending their items, I would be able to generate more money for them.” For more information about Worldwide Product Access, call (888) 502-4449, ext. 124, or e-mail: wwproductaccess@gmail.com.
