According to Cara Stone, who owns and operates yoga studios in Long Beach and Garden City, yoga is far more than exercise and relaxation techniques. It helps people get past negativity, build strength mentally, physically and spiritually, and lets them ultimately enjoy a better daily life experience.

“It doesn’t matter who you are or in what physical shape you are. There is no competition in yoga … no right or wrong,” Stone said. Her studios offer a vast cross section of classes — for those of any age, people with back issues, meditation, strength building and many others. “Members just want to be here and connect with one another.  It’s a cohesive community with positive energy. And this type of transformation raises awareness.”

Stone met Hana Anat Hershko, who then owned Yoga Long Beach, at One Love Long Island (OLLI) four years ago. OLLI works in collaboration with “Off the Mat and Into the World,” which uses the power of yoga to inspire consciousness and activism for social change. Yoga Long Beach (YLB) and Yoga Nanda are two of 20 Long Island yoga studios that participate. Their mission is to raise awareness and funds to combat the horrific atrocities of the human trafficking industry, and to support empowerment programs for survivors.

On Sept. 26, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Sands Point Preserve, these 20 yoga studio communities will unite for this purpose “with common breath, compassion and the practice of yoga.“ The festival, held annually, will feature special guest appearances by Cosmic Yogi Dana Flynn, and Kirtan Musician David Newman, aka Durga Das! There will also be Dance Trance, a drum circle, henna, special treats, many vendors and plenty of fun. Further details are listed on www.onelovelongisland.org .
