Bond work progresses at Sewanhaka

The summer months at Sewanhaka Central High School District have been filled with excitement as some of the renovations approved as part of the district’s May 2014 bond referendum are nearing fruition.

The repairs, part of Phase II of the district’s capital improvement projects, included roof replacements, asbestos abatement and new stadium fields and tracks at all five high schools. Two new concession stands were installed, one at the Sewanhaka field, the other at H. Frank Carey. H. Frank Carey also received a new elevator.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ralph Ferrie said the completed work is another step in providing the district’s students with the facilities they deserve. He also stressed the importance of the roof replacements and asbestos abatement.

“The asbestos abatement was most critical,” he said. “And although the athletic fields are the most visible project of Phase II, the most important part was the roof installations at all five schools. They will alleviate the leaks that were occurring at each of the buildings.”

Additional improvements include the installation of new carpeting in the library at New Hyde Park Memorial as well as sod in the school’s courtyard.

Projects scheduled for the fall of 2015 include the baseball fields at Elmont Memorial, H. Frank Carey and New Hyde Park Memorial and the installation of new gymnasium windows at Sewanhaka High School. Softball fields at Floral Park Memorial and H. Frank Carey and a soccer field at New Hyde Park Memorial will also be installed.
