Elmont cools off Sewanhaka

With Elmont and Sewanhaka high schools located less than four miles apart, it was no surprise that last Saturday afternoon’s football game between the schools ended up a heated battle.

“I’m sure both teams had this circled on their schedule as a big game,” Elmont head coach Jay Heig said. “A lot of these kids know each other, so I think both teams were amped up.”

Both squads fought hard in a key Nassau Conference II matchup, but Elmont came away with an 18-8 road victory over the Indians. Spartans quarterback Simon Kalu led the way with passing and rushing touchdowns. In total, the senior finished with 96 passing yards and 143 rushing yards.

“It was a pretty big win,” Kalu said. “We just had to come out and stick to the game plan, and we just executed.”

Elmont (3-3) opened the scoring early in the second quarter, when junior Aston Brown broke through the left side of the field for a 24-yard rushing touchdown. After a failed two-point conversion attempt, the Spartans held a 6-0 lead with 10:38 remaining in the half.

Later in the quarter, Sewanhaka senior running back Brenton Mighty found a hole up the middle and ran 45 yards for a touchdown to tie it. He then rushed into the end zone again on the conversion attempt to give the Indians an 8-6 advantage with 4:21 left in the first half.

Elmont answered with just 1:13 remaining before halftime, as Kalu connected with senior wideout Andre Whittick on a 32-yard scoring pass. The Spartans once again failed on a two-point try, but took a 12-8 lead into the locker room.

Kalu stretched the advantage to 18-8 at the 4:33 mark of the third quarter with a 23-yard rushing TD, keeping the ball off the snap and slipping past several Sewanhaka defenders on the left side of the field to reach the end zone.

Late in the third quarter, Mighty once again broke free for a long rushing touchdown, but this time the score was negated by a holding penalty.

Early in the fourth quarter the Indians once again missed out on a grand opportunity to get back into the game. Sewanhaka (4-2) drove all the way down to Elmont’s 6-yard line before losing the ball to the Spartans on a fumble.
