Fosters Meadow celebrates at the Steuben Parade

Supporters of the Fosters Meadow Heritage Center participated in the 55th annual Steuben German-American Day Parade up 5th Avenue in New York City on Saturday. Various regions of Germany were represented in the parade. This was the first year that the Fosters Meadow Heritage Center was represented in the parade.

The area formerly called Fosters Meadow first developed as a German farming community in the 1850’s. It is not longer called Fosters Meadow, but is comprised of Elmont, North Valley Stream, Valley Stream, Laurelton, Rosedale Cambria Heights, Springfield, Floral Park, Franklin Square and parts of Jamaica, Queens. Still today, many of their descendants are actively farming in New York, New Jersey and Florida.

Amongst the youngest descendants marching in the parade from Fosters Meadow were, Jacob Herman, 10, a 7th generation descendant of the Herman family, and a 6th generation descendant of the Rottkamp and Froehlich families, along with Gabriel Pina, 9, and Chloe Pina, 5, both 7th generation descendants of the Kraus family.
