Kevin Klein steps in as OFD chief

Oceanside Fire Department’s four chiefs for 2017 were sworn in earlier this month, as Kevin Klein replaced John Madden as chief of department.

The other officers welcoming new roles are First Assistant Chief David P. Bettes, from Salamander Hook, Ladder and Bucket Company No. 1, Second Assistant Chief Robert C. Sutton Jr., of Columbia Engine Company No. 1, and Third Assistant Chief Joseph J. Caroccia, from Oceanside Hose Company No. 1.

Fire department members vote on the chiefs every December, according to Oceanside Fire Department spokesman Ed Scharfburg. Normally, the chiefs spend a year at each level, eventually reaching chief of department.

Klein, born and raised in Oceanside, joined the OFD in 1993 while still a senior at Oceanside High School. His father, Steven Klein, was chief of the department in 1984. The younger Klein was a lieutenant at Terrace Hose Company No. 3 on Columbus Avenue for four years, and a captain there for five years.

This is Klein’s eighth year as a chief officer in the department, as he has served as an assistant chief for six years and was chief of department in 2013.

Klein said his priorities as chief include making sure fire department members receive the best training and equipment in order to serve the public’s needs. He added that he hopes to bring a training facility — much like the one condemned a decade ago — back to Oceanside during his time as chief.

He also emphasized the OFD’s continued participation in local fundraisers and events.

“We want the community to know that the fire department is more than just when you have a fire emergency and call us,” Klein said. “We’re all members of the community. Many of us have grown up here and live here still, and we really try to be a part of the fabric of the community.”

Madden, who spent five years as a chief officer — the last two as chief of department — will now return to Oceanside Hose Company No. 1. He will also help run the department’s training bureau.
