Thank you, and keep helping

To the Editor:
I want to express my profound gratitude to the Herald for recognizing me as your “Person of the Year.”
In honoring me for the limited role that I played in East Rockaway’s recovery from Hurricane Sandy, I ask the Herald, my friends and my neighbors to similarly honor the people in our community who volunteer each and every day without fanfare or the expectation of recognition and praise.
Our hometown is made up of volunteers who come together not just in times of tragedy, but in our proudest moments as a community and as a country. Our neighbors are veterans, clergy, firefighters, EMTs, auxiliary police, small-business owners, library employees, alumni, teachers and others who give new meaning to being a public servant. Let’s thank them.  In this time of continuing need, please don’t stop knocking on your neighbors’ doors and offering to help if you have the resources to do so. There are so many families without flood or other insurance, without the ability to gut their homes or to rebuild, or who don’t have a way to ask for help. If you have time, money, skills, friendship or prayers to offer your neighbors, please do. Together, we will be back and better than ever.

Elizabeth M. Daitz, East Rockaway
