Making dreams come true

Students and faculty of H. Frank Carey High School took part in a special fundraising effort to help 16-year-old Gina Mulieri, a teenager with a massive brain tumor.

World Languages teacher Denise Cruz learned about Mulieri through the Kids Need More organization. Cruz organized a T-shirt sale along with Carey students to help raise funds to offset the cost of Mulieri’s Sweet 16 party, something the teenager never expected to see, after her diagnosis at the age of eight.

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Carey community, Cruz and her students were able to make the centerpieces, favors, baskets and a candy buffet for the party. They also raised enough funds to send Mulieri to Camp Adventure, a camp created by Kids Need More for children diagnosed with cancer and their siblings.

In addition to raising funds, 30 Carey students and staff helped out at the Sweet 16 party. The efforts of the Carey community will be honored during a Heroes on Our Island segment on FIOS1.
