Music and dance bring history to life at Alden Terrace

Alden Terrace School students participated in an interactive workshop that highlighted the significance of West African music and dance as part of the school's Black History Month celebration.

Gene Osborne, Jr. and the Djoule African Dance and Drum Company provided students and teachers with a memorable musical experience that allowed them to play drums and dance along with the performers. Students were also educated on the different parts of the djembe drum and how each drum is unique. In addition, they learned about the main strokes used to play a large drum and that every song and dance is a meaningful way to communicate.

"Every rite of passage, going from a child to an adult, getting married, all of the milestones in your life have a special rhythm and dance," performer Khadyjah Harper said.

Principal Shawnée Warfield expressed her gratitude to the school's PTA for sponsoring the engaging workshop that offered students the history of civilization through music.
