Nighttime Closures of Southbound Meadowbrook Parkway begin tonight

Posted

Motorists are advised that nighttime closures of the southbound Meadowbrook State Parkway (MSP) between Northern State Parkway (NSP) in Westbury and Glenn Curtiss Boulevard in East Meadow in Nassau County will begin tonight, Monday, Sept. 8, for repaving.

Beginning at 10 p.m. two southbound MSP travel lanes will be closed followed by a full closure at midnight of all southbound MSP travel lanes. These night closures will continue each night, Monday through Friday between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. except for Saturday mornings when a single southbound travel lane will be reopened at 6:00 a.m. and full reopening will take place at 7:30 a.m. These closures of more than four miles of southbound MSP are expected to continue about six weeks, weather permitting. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate travel routes such as the Wantagh State Parkway (WSP) or they will experience delays especially during the initial road closure procedure at 10:00 p.m. Drivers who do not use alternate routes will be detoured to NSP eastbound to Glen Cove Road Westbound.

Also included in this four mile, $16.6 million repaving project is northbound MSP in the same area and the resurfacing of more five-and-a-half miles of the Northern State Parkway (NSP) between the WSP and the Long Island Expressway (LIE/I-495). The NSP eastbound, a priority location, is expected to begin once the MSP southbound repaving is complete. The top layer of worn, distressed MSP asphalt is being removed. Pavement repairs will be made, traffic radar and loop detectors replaced, and new asphalt and pavement markings provided. When completed, these pavement repairs will improve motorists’ safety and help maintain the integrity of the MSP for the approximately 130,000 motorists who drive this section of the MSP each day. Motorists are being warned in advance of the closings. Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these southbound MSP night closures.

Drivers who cannot use alternate routes are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone for their safety as well as the safety of the highway work crew. As with most road and bridge projects, this construction work may be cancelled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.
