Harrington’s troupe is also known as a resource for family entertainment. This year’s summer schedule reaches into the Disney vault, with appealing productions of “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” Plaza’s charming production of “Beauty and the Beast” stars East Rockaway’s Emma Harrington as the delightful Belle and Joseph Anthony, of Freeport, as her Beast. Dancing flatware, menacing wolves, and singing furniture fill the stage in this beloved fairy tale about very different people finding strength in one another and learning how to love.
It is making the rounds of venues, including Lynbrook’s Greis Park, on Saturday, at 7 p.m.; in Eisenhower Park, at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre, on Sunday, as part of the park’s Children’s Day festivities, beginning at 1 p.m.; and the Rec Center, also in Lynbrook, next Friday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. You can also find the show at Memorial Park in East Rockaway, on Aug. 9, at 7 p.m., and at Plaza’s stage in Bellmore.
The lovely Ariel is ventures out from under the sea in “The Little Mermaid, Jr.,” which Plaza stages on weekends at Long Island Children’s Museum in Garden City, beginning Aug. 9., at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Also, Plaza brings back its popular production of “Pinkalicious,” staging it at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury, on Aug. 12, at 11 a.m.
As always, a summer theater season must include some Shakespeare. For that, Long Island’s resource is the Arena Players, now presenting its annual summer production in the Vanderbilt Museum’s cobblestone courtyard, set against the magnificent backdrop of the historic Vanderbilt Mansion, in Centerport.
