Renovations planned for high schools

Elmont Memorial and H. Frank Carey high schools are planning to renovate key building components in anticipation of the likely adoption of the Sewanhaka district budget on April 4.

Proposals for the construction projects were presented by Hauppauge-based Wiedersum Associates at the Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education meeting on March 19.

Officials plan to replace the elevator and the auditorium lighting board at Elmont Memorial High School at a cost of just over $378,000.

Planned for Carey High School are the renovation of its baseball field and the replacement of its courtyard doors, which would cost the district an estimated $79, 931.

The total projected budget for the district, which also includes Floral Park Memorial High School, New Hyde Park Memorial High School and Sewanhaka High School, is $174.4 million.

Superintendent Dr. Ralph Ferrie said that these costs are preliminary and based on earlier estimates.

“These numbers are updated from original costs the architects calculated in 2008,” said Ferrie, adding that plans will not be finalized until the summer. “The [Wiedersum Associates’ proposal] was thorough and worked through additional costs and architectural contingencies.”

Wiedersum Associates will continue dialogue with the district about its proposals at the April 4 meeting.
