DISTRICT 30

Proposed budget: $33,348,021
Change: +$26,007 (+.08 percent)

Tax levy: $26,591,233
Change: None
Tax cap allowable increase: 1.36 percent

Tax impact: With no tax levy increase, the impact on individual homeowners is expected to be minimal.

Budget highlights: The district would preserve all programs and class sizes. The budget includes funding for additional aides, monitors and a part-time special education teacher. There would be technology upgrades across the district including the replacement of many classroom computers in the three elementary schools, as well as in the computer labs at Forest Road and Clear Stream Avenue. Network upgrades are also planned. The district would also purchase more iPads or similar mobile devices for educational purposes.

Contingency budget: If the budget were to fail twice, the district would not have to cut any programs or staff positions because there is no proposed increase to the tax levy. However, it would have to follow certain contingency mandates. The district would not be able to purchase any non-essential equipment, and the use of buildings by the community would be limited.

Revenue: The district is slated to receive about $6.5 million in state aid. That is a 20 percent increase, one of the largest on Long Island, largely due to enrollment increases. The district also will be getting $200,000 in the third and final year of a performance grant. About $30,000 from reserves would be used.

Propositions: Voters will be asked to approve spending $1.495 million from an existing capital reserve fund for heating, ventilation and lighting upgrades at the Clear Stream Avenue School in the summer of 2015. Voters are also being asked to approve the creation of a new capital reserve fund for five years, not to exceed $6 million, for potential future projects including the construction of an elevator at Clear Stream, and additional classrooms at Forest Road and Shaw Avenue, if enrollment rises.

Board of Education: Carolyn Torres, the current board president, is running unopposed for her second five-year term.

Voting information: Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Clear Stream Avenue, Forest Road and Shaw Avenue schools.
