Valley Stream man, 96, to speak about decades of running

Posted

A Valley Stream man will be a featured speaker at the Long Island Running Club’s general meeting at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library in Plainview on Sept. 15.

Bill Benson, 96, will join 88-year-old Bert Jablon, of Syosset, to speak about the experience and benefits of running through the golden years. Both men still run on a regular basis and compete in road races, most recently completing the Heart and Sole 5-Kilometer Run in Plainview on July 19 and the Lynn, Gartner, Dunne and Covello Sands Point Sprint 5-Kilometer Run in the Sands Point Preserve on Aug. 9.

Benson and Jablon, known as the “Grand Old Men” of Long Island running and racing, will share “war stories” from their decades of running, and will talk about their longevity and how they have stayed active and involved in the running scene for as long as they have.

The meeting is open to the public, which is cordially invited to attend at no cost. It will be held in the library’s auditorium at 8 p.m. For more information, call Mike Polansky at (516) 349-7646.
